Africa Live! Exhibit, San Antonio Zoo

Texas Construction Magazine named the Africa Live! Exhibit at the San Antonio Zoo as its “2008 Best of Non-Profit” project award winner. The Africa Live! Exhibit is open 365 days a year, spans 1.5 acres, and is composed of a nonlinear, curved structure with 300 drilled piers in a tight, 18,000-sq-ft footprint. Design of the exhibit was especially challenging in that it required demolition of 3.8 acres of the existing zoo property, the complete renovation of the elephant area, and the design of specialized circulation and filtration systems for a state-of-the-art underwater hippo and crocodile habitat that allowed visitors to observe the animals in a simulated natural environment.

Vickrey & Associates, Inc. provided consulting engineering and surveying services for the San Antonio Zoological Society, Jones & Jones Architects, and the contractor, C.F. Jordon Construction to develop the award-winning Exhibit. VICKREY was responsible for the site dimension plan for building and exhibit placement in accordance with the architect's layout, the storm water drainage design and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SW3P), building electrical and plumbing design, and the wastewater systems. In addition, we completed the fire and domestic water design, which included analysis for fire flow protection and domestic facility demand, and required coordination with the San Antonio Fire Marshal to develop the fire access and protection plan.We also coordinated with CPS Energy for the electrical demands, consolidation of electrical services, construction of power mains, and a new gas distribution system. VICKREY provided topographic survey, staking, and construction phase services.

Fort Hood Athletic Stadium Relocation Survey

VICKREY performed a topographic survey for approximately 75 acres within Foot Hood, Kileen, Texas. The topo limits were 80% undeveloped. Responsibilities included establishing GPS/RTK control for project; performing differential leveling, surveying all visible improvements and utilities, all visible utility paint markings as placed by utility locators, all trees on site, all drainage features, and manhole details and pipe inverts. Survey technicians used this raw data to develop a digital terrain model, plainimetrics, contours at one-foot intervals, utility layout, and tree survey. All electronic files needed to conform with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Standards. This data, along with metadata will be used for the design-build of a new stadium.

Missions Baseball Academy

VICKREY completed planning and design of the Bexar County Missions Baseball Academy. This exciting community project, funded through the Bexar County Community Venues Program, will provide the Bexar County community with four new full-sized baseball fields. These fields will become the first facility of its kind in the San Antonio area, hosting league games, as well as regional and national tournaments featuring competition from high school and college-age players.

VICKREY provided master planning services related to the development of these four adult league baseball fields, along with an associated 300 stall parking lot, sidewalks, a concession stand, and a maintenance facility. The design included the site grading, water main design, septic system design, lighting design and landscape design. We prepared a master layout, a construction phasing plan, and an overall cost estimate to develop the fields; assisted in coordination with determining the other consultants for the landscape and lighting; completed a subdivision plat, a Utility Service Agreement with SAWS, a preliminary engineering site plan, fire flow analysis, and final construction documents.

Our team worked closely with the owner in securing permitting for the facility which is located in the direct flight path of the main runway at Lackland Air Force Base and in coordinating other land development issues with the City.
