IH-35 Northbound Ramps

Callaghan Road, Ingram to Hemphill Roadway & Drainage Improvements

Fox Grove Subdivision

VICKREY provided civil design and surveying services for this 477-acre, 1,149-lot subdivision located in north Bexar County over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, which included over 42,500 linear feet of arterial, collector and local roadways and a bridge-class culvert crossing of Elm Waterhole Creek consisting of sixteen 10’x10’ concrete boxes. The project also included over 47,100 feet of new 8-, 12-, and 16-inch water main, 40,200 feet of sanitary sewer main, and a new lift station. Rather than providing numerous small detention basins, the increase in stormwater runoff from the development was mitigated by excavating within the storage area of the downstream SCS Dam No. 12, thereby increasing its storage volume. The firm provided master planning, design, subdivision platting, construction administration and staking, as well as permitting & coordination with TCEQ and FEMA.

IH-35 Northbound Ramps

This project consisted of constructing one new at-grade off ramp and one at-grade off ramp just north of the intersection of Walzem Road. These ramps provide access off of IH-35 Northbound lanes to the frontage road and access onto the NW Loop 410 West frontage road. This project also includes a new direct connector overhead bridge, which connected the IH-35 NB frontage road with the IH-35 NB main lanes. There were various drainage aspects associated with this project. VICKREY's scope of work for this project was to prepare a hydrology and hydraulics (H&H) drainage report detailing the results of the analysis of the drainage aspects associated with the construction of the three roadway ramps. We conducted hydrology and hydraulics analysis based on the proposed ramps and bridge layouts to design a drainage concept, which allowed for proper conveyance of the existing storm water runoff patterns created by this construction project. Our analysis and design of the drainage components for this project included: the sizing and placement of on grade inlets along the direct connector bridge, sag inlets in the median areas to control storm water runoff that has been cut off by the proposed ramps, storm sewer design to convey impeded runoff, and detention pond design to mitigate for increased runoff.

Callaghan Road, Ingram to Hemphill Roadway & Drainage Improvements

VICKREY provided roadway, drainage, and utility design engineering services for the reconstruction of 3600 feet of Callaghan Road from Ingram to Hemphill Street. The project involved the upgrade of the street from one lane in each direction to a full secondary arterial section with two lanes in each direction and the reconstruction of seven (7) street intersections. There were two existing, low water crossings which required upgrades to a culvert that could contain the 100-year design storm. Another existing culvert at Darwin Drive was replaced and upsized to meet the 100-year design storm. The design of the upgrades required permit approval from the Corps of Engineers. The project involved shared-use lanes and shared-use paths for bicycle and pedestrian usage in the area. Special coordination efforts were required due to the location of an elementary school and much of the project being in the school zone. VIA bus stops were also upgraded as part of the project. Utilities were very important during design since there were existing electrical transmission line towers, overhead electrical, natural gas transmission mains, water and sanitary sewer in the existing Right of Way. The design of the culverts and storm drainage was completed to avoid as many conflicts as possible. The firm also prepared the construction plans for water, sanitary sewer and gas main improvements within the project limits. The traffic control plans were designed to incorporate proposed utility and roadway improvements. The project was designed for three separate entities in less than six months.
