VICKREY conducted an investigation for the sources of the deterioration of hatchery stock ponds at the CCA-CPL Marine Development Center. The hatchery is located at the Barney Davis Power Plant in Corpus Christi, Texas. The hatchery became operational in 1982 with the original ten 2-acre ponds and conducted an expansion in the late 80’s with an additional ten 1/2-acre ponds and fourteen 1-acre ponds. While the 1-acre and 1/2-acre pond liners exceeded their life span of 20 plus years, the 2-acre ponds have encountered issues of liner deterioration and soil erosion. VICKREY is recommending a suitable product to replace the worn out pond liners that will endure a wide range of environments. A proper subgrade and grading plan will also be required to properly support the liner and drain back to their fish recovery structures. A game-proof perimeter fence will also be installed to prevent wildlife from walking across the pond liners and further damage them. The firm is consulting with a geotechnical engineer to ensure a stable subgrade will be used to support the pond liner and equipment that is driven in the ponds to recover fish. VICKREY is also consulting with manufacturers and contractors to ensure the most efficient methods and products are used.
